I do like these evolution gifs but wish they came with a speed control so you could slow down the evolution to look at certain sections in detail

I was under the impression that NASCAR stock cars don’t reach as high of speeds now as they did 10 years ago for safety reasons? Or am I wrong?

Or is this the unrestricted top speed, not the actual in-race top speeds they reach?

Yeah, the speed part is misleading. The fast track speed was 212 mph back in like 1988. For the two fastest tracks, Daytona and Talladega, NASCAR introduced restrictor plates for the cars at those races after they determined that it was just too dangerous to race as those speeds.

That being said they can still touch 201 or 202 at certain tracks.
